Council Tax final notice explained

You've lost the right to pay monthly. The rest of this year's bill is now due in one go, and the next step is court action.

Last checked: 18 October 2026 · Written by Ivan S., council finance professional

What it is A demand for the full year's remaining balance
Deadline Usually 7 days in England and Wales, 14 in Scotland
Can't pay? Ask for a payment plan before the deadline passes

Why you got this

Usually because a reminder notice wasn't paid within 7 days, or you've missed payments several times in the same year. Once a final notice is issued, the monthly instalments on your original bill no longer apply.

What to do now

  1. If you can, pay the full amount shown on the notice before the deadline. That ends it.
  2. If you can't, call the council today. Many councils will agree a new payment arrangement, even at this stage, if you contact them before court action starts.
  3. Check for discounts or Council Tax Reduction. They won't cancel the notice but can cut what you owe.
  4. Get free debt advice if you have other bills behind too. Citizens Advice and StepChange can help you prioritise. Council Tax is a priority debt.

If you ignore it

England and WalesA magistrates' court summons, with court costs added, then a liability order. See the summons page.
ScotlandA summary warrant from the sheriff court, typically adding a 10% surcharge. Sheriff officers can then take money from wages or bank accounts.
